Why is it necessary to inspect removable components before the mechanical processing of lithium batteries?

When encountering spent battery packs, the immediate reaction for many is to proceed directly to shredding and sorting.

However, for large power battery packs and energy storage packs, it is essential to verify the presence of coolants, residual electrolytes, external wiring harnesses, battery management systems (BMS), and other detachable components before mechanical processing begins.

These components do not appear in exactly the same configuration across all battery pack types.

Some packs feature liquid cooling systems, while others have more complex internal structures; some materials are suitable for immediate basic dismantling and inspection, whereas others require specific handling—such as isolation, discharging, or specialized processing—based on their actual condition.

Therefore, when designing the front-end process for a recycling project, one must consider not only the specifications of the shredding equipment but also the necessary pre-shredding inspections.

For instance, on-site checks can determine:

  • Whether the battery pack contains coolant or shows signs of significant liquid residue;
  • Whether there is any damage, leakage, swelling, or abnormal heat generation;
  • Whether external wiring harnesses, electronic control units, and other ancillary materials require prior removal or treatment;
  • Whether the material meets the criteria for subsequent mechanical processing;
  • How liquids, detachable components, and anomalous materials should be separately collected and documented.

Guidelines on waste battery processing issued by the UK Environment Agency stipulate that for large lithium-ion battery packs, any relevant liquids must be drained and collected prior to mechanical processing; furthermore, the mechanical processing itself must be conducted using controlled, enclosed methods tailored to the material’s characteristics. This requirement underscores that front-end inspection is not merely an extra step, but a foundational measure ensuring the stability of downstream processes.
